Richard A. Hammersmith, 80, Defiance, passed away Sunday morning, October 23, 2011, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.
He was born July 13, 1931, in Evansport, Ohio, the son of Ralph Sr. and Nellie (Little) Hammersmith. On Oct. 9, 1954, he was united in marriage to Rubye Parrish, who survives. Richard was a lifelong resident of the Defiance area and a Korean War veteran. He was a supervisor at the GM Powertrain foundry in Defiance for over 39 years and retired in 1988. He was a life member of the VFW and was a member of the local Eagles, Elks Lodge 147 and AMVETS Post 1991.
He is survived by three daughters, Jackie Jones of Defiance, Cynthia (Dan) Downey of Sarasota, Florida, and Suzanne (Russ) McMaster of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Shelley Smethurst of Defiance, James Downey, Samuel Downey and Emma Downey, all of Sarasota, Fla., Sean McMaster of Atlanta, Georgia, Ainsley and Allison McMaster of Pleasant Prairie; and two great-grandchildren, Kalli Smethurst and Trevor Naugle of Defiance.
Richard is also survived by five brothers, William, George, James, Gene and Marvin Hammersmith; and two sisters, Carolyn Reed and Teresa Hohenberger.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Jimmy W. Jones; and three brothers, Ralph Jr., Donald and Robert Hammersmith.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Rev. Timothy Yazel officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, where the Defiance VFW 3360 will accord military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
