MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- E. Gordon Gee has been named as West Virginia University's 24th president.
Gee was hired as interim president last December after Jim Clements left for Clemson University. The university's Board of Governors named the 70-year-old Gee to take over the permanent job on Monday during an emergency meeting in Morgantown.
Gee's hiring also must be approved by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
Gee would succeed Jim Clements, who left for Clemson University.
If approved, it would be Gee's second stint as WVU's president. He led the university from 1981 to 1985.
Gee also served two different stints as Ohio State's president. He retired from Ohio State in July 2013 after his critical remarks about Roman Catholics and Southeastern Conference schools were made public.
