NEW YORK (AP) -- Mobile technology like smartphones and tablets offers some good and bad news for the news industry.
A report issued Monday found that these devices are increasing the public appetite for news. Tablets are growing in popularity and there's evidence that people spend more time with news on tablets than they do on smartphones or desktops.
But the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism says it's still not clear whether the news industry will profit from that trend. That's because technology companies are better set up than news organizations to make money from digital advertising.
Experts say news organizations need to act fast or another revenue opportunity will pass them by.
