CINCINNATI (AP) -- The county coroner in Cincinnati has died following a fall in which he injured his head.

University Hospital in Cincinnati says Hamilton County Coroner Anant Bhati died Friday. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the 71-year-old doctor had fallen outside the Westin Hotel Downtown on Feb. 8.

Bhati had been appointed coroner in 2010 by the county Democratic Party following the resignation of O'dell Owens. He was seeking his first full term as coroner this year.

A native of Jodphur, India, Bhati had also been director of gynecology at Good Samaritan since 1980. He also was a volunteer professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and served nine years as a university trustee.
