Three vie for Paulding County commissioner post in November 2012 election

PAULDING ­­--Three individuals are vying for a commissioner seat in Paulding County.

Robert Boyd, Roy Klopfenstein and Mike Winans are running for the seat that belonged to Tony Burkley, who is seeking the 82nd House District seat.

The candidates have been working with the public in different ways.

Boyd has worked in the public service sector for more than 30 years, including working for the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and county engineer's office. He completed basic police school and has taken part in Paulding County Leadership in Action and other leadership educational programs at Ivy Tech as well.

Roy Klopfenstein has been a trustee of the Paulding County Area Foundation as well as serving on the extension advisory board, and Blue Creek Township Zoning Appeals Board. He was also appointed to the USDA Farm Service Agency State Committee from Jan. 1, 2004-Dec. 31, 2008.

Mike Winans is the project manager for the Auglaize River Sewer Project in the county.

Party affiliation: Democrat

Reason for seeking office: To continue to serve the people of Paulding County in a rewarding and more hands-on capacity.

Qualifications for the position: 34 years of public service working with the different county agencies of Paulding County.

Top three goals (and how you expect to achieve them): 1. To be a full-time commissioner, by devoting my time and attention during regular business hours and also by being available at the people's convenience. 2. Working with local business owners, offering them every means that the commissioner's office has to available to help them grow and expand and also working close with our economic development agency and other agencies in attracting new business by communicating the advantages of Paulding County with our links to major highways such as U.S. 127, U.S. 24, U.S. 30 and I-75. 3. Keeping the county budget intact and being prepared for unforeseen events.

Party affiliation: Republican

Reason for seeking office: 1. Civic duty, many people have contributed in the past to make Paulding County a great place for Deborah and I to raise our family, work, and live. It was time for us to give back to our community for the next generation. 2. I wish to continue responsible and conservative values for our citizens.

Qualifications for the position: Having served on numerous boards I realize the importance of working together, to include everyone in the discussion of business and ideas. There are three commissioners so it is important to work together for the benefit of Paulding County citizens. I have experience as an employee and an employer. I have also been self employed in farming for over 30 years. I will draw on that experience in making decisions. I have been active with different organizations in the county and hope to use those connections to network and serve our community.

Top three goals (and how you expect to achieve them): 1. Contribute to responsible spending of our county tax dollars. 2. Make decisions that are in the best interest of our community long term as well as today. 3. Promote and attract businesses for our county's citizens, especially our youth that need to leave for a job to support and raise a family.

Party affiliation: Independent

Reason for seeking office: Paulding County has been good to me. Now I want to give back to this county that has given so much to me.

What are your qualifications for the position? As Auglaize River Sewer Project manager the last two years, I have worked closely with the commissioners and many of our elected officials. Working together has given me a deeper understanding of the job and my years in business and board membership experience will also be an asset.

Top three goals (and how you expect to achieve them): 1. Strive to create more county jobs by working closely with the economic development office. 2. Work as a team with other elected officials and county offices to better our county and its communities. 3. Always work with the whole county on an equal basis by keeping an open mind.
