PAULDING -- Two attorneys are battling it out to be named prosecutor in Paulding County after the Nov. 6 general election.
Incumbent Joseph Burkard and challenger Harvey Hyman both are seeking office to make the county a safe place to raise a family, however the two have different goals for the office.
Here is a look at the candidates:
Name: Joseph Burkard
Address: 03699 Road 279, Antwerp
Education: North Central, Pioneer, graduate, 1978; University of Findlay graduate, 1982; and University of Toledo College of Law graduate, 1992
Family: children: Nicholas (Beca) Burkard, McCalla Burkard and Andrew Burkard.
Previous elected offices: Paulding prosecuting attorney since 1996
Party affiliation: Republican
Reason for seeking office: Seeking re-election to continue to serve the residents of Paulding County and keep this a safe place to live and raise our families.
Qualifications for the position: As prosecutor since 1996, I have prosecuted over 1,600 felony cases and thousands of misdemeanor cases while serving the other county elected officials and agencies.
Top three goals (and how you expect to achieve them): Aggressively prosecute criminals -- continue to work closely with law enforcement; continue to work with victims of crime -- give victims a voice in the courtroom through victim services; serve the elected officials and county agencies -- provide a high level of service that is responsive to needs and inquiries.
Name: Harvey Hyman
Address: 10693 Ohio 500, Paulding
Education: Paulding High School graduate, 2003; Hillsdale College graduate, 2007; and University of Toledo College of Law graduate, 2009
Family: wife, Caci Hyman
Previous elected offices: N/A
Party affiliation: Independent
Reason for seeking office: I will be a fair, focused and full-time prosecutor for the people of Paulding County. I want to help make our county a safe place for families.
Qualifications for the position: I am a licensed attorney with several years of experience in criminal law. I have a 75 percent success rate at trial, and I know the challenges and problems our county is facing.
Top three goals (and how you expect to achieve them): 1. Crack down on drug use -- hardcore drug use is a major problem in the county. Heroin, cocaine, meth and "bath salts" have infiltrated our county. The police have been making the arrests. It is up to the prosecutor to get the convictions. I will make sure that we get convictions, and work toward driving drugs out of Paulding County. 2. Restore hope --we need to send a message: Paulding County is not a place where criminals want to be. Clean, safe streets go a long way toward restoring hope. 3. Availability -- from ensuring we have a handicap-accessible office, to being a full-time prosecutor there are a lot of things I will do to make the prosecutor more available to the people of Paulding County. I will make sure that the prosecutor will be available and accessible to all the people of Paulding County.
