HANOVER, Ind. (AP) -- Actor Woody Harrelson's southern Indiana alma mater has honored him for his decades of work on stage and screen and his advocacy work.

Harrelson received the honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Hanover College during a ceremony last Saturday.

Harrelson graduated from Hanover in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in English. He soon endeared himself to television audiences by portraying dim but loveable bartender Woody Boyd on "Cheers."
