Man shot by Columbus police

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Authorities say a man has been shot by a Columbus police officer after he fired his gun into his girlfriend's house.

Thomas M. Bell III is in stable condition at Grant Medical Center after being shot once in his midsection. Bell, whose last known address was in Whitehall, is expected to recover.

Sgt. Rich Weiner tells the Columbus Dispatch that police received a call at around 6:35 p.m. Thursday that 26-year-old Bell had fired multiple shots at the locked front door of a house, attempting to get in.

A police helicopter located him running toward an alley and an officer who chased him fired his shotgun once, hitting Bell.

Police recovered a handgun and ammunition. It wasn't immediately known if Bell fired his gun or pointed it at officers.
