Singing for a Cure will be held Saturday, April 26 at 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 232 West Arthur Street, Hicksville. This Gospel music concert featuring Chuck and Bridget Witte and Ed McDowell is a fundraiser for Hicksville Relay for Life.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Hicksville Relay for Life teams of First Presbyterian Church and Friends of Relay. Admission is a free-will offering.
“We are thrilled to have professional recording artists of this caliber donate their time and talents to a Relay fundraiser. Like many of us, they understand from personal experience how important it is to celebrate our survivors, remember those we lost, and fight back against cancer,” event organizer Harriet Keith said.
She adds, “The Wittes and McDowell have shared the Gospel musical stage many times over the years, and that long-standing friendship and rapport should make for a fun as well as inspirational evening.”
Chuck learned to play guitar in high school and began singing professionally in his early 20’s. The Wittes have been performing together professionally since the early 1970’s, for 10 years in The Country Roads. When both Chuck and Bridget became Christians, they decided their music needed a new life as well- and they began performing Gospel music in The Friends of Jesus. They now perform as a duet, and enjoy singing both country and Gospel in a variety of venues.
McDowell began playing guitar and singing in his teens in local venues in Southern Ohio. His Gospel music career includes touring as the patriarch of The McDowell Family for several years. While Southern Gospel music is still a favorite of his, current song lists for solo performances can include country, pop, and Elvis. Ed is involved with area open mic events, and can also be found playing music at both the Hicksville and Defiance sites of the Defiance County Senior Services.
Those attending the concert will also have the opportunity to add names to the Relay tree. The decorations on this tree are different color ribbons representing the different cancers, and each has a name written on it. The tree will also be on display at the 2014 Relay for Life to be held June 20 and 21 at the Hicksville Schools with the theme A Cure for All Seasons.
Information on luminaries, joining a team, or starting a new team will also be available at the concert.
