Virginia Williams, mother of ex-DC mayor, dies


WASHINGTON (AP) -- Virginia Williams, the mother of former D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams, has died after a brief illness, her son says.

Anthony Williams says his mother died Thursday in Los Angeles after a brief illness. She was 87.

Virginia Williams became known as first mother of the district during her son's two terms from 1999 to 2007.

Anthony Williams said his mother had a huge impact on Washington.

A memorial service is being planned for later this year.
