SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A popular hiking trail at Zion National Park is buried in 6 feet of debris after a rock slide that trapped nearly a dozen hikers for several hours.
Chief Ranger Cindy Purcell tells The Associated Press that the 2.4-mile Hidden Canyon trail remains unstable and is closed at least for the weekend.
The Hidden Canyon trail follows narrow cliff faces and steep drop-offs at Weeping Rock off Zion's main canyon.
Purcell says rangers with safety ropes rescued 11 hikers stranded on a section of the trail Wednesday. Nobody was injured.
In another hazard of geology at the park, heavy rains Saturday brought a debris flow that covered parts of Watchman Campground in 6 inches of mud.
