Crews recover body believed to be that of hiker

PRINCEVILLE, Hawaii (AP) -- Officials say firefighters have recovered a body that's believed to be that of a hiker swept out to sea while trying to cross a stream in Kauai Saturday.

Kauai fire officials say the body of an adult female was pulled from the ocean after it was spotted by a tour boat about four miles west of Hanakapiai Sunday morning.

The body was taken by a Kauai Fire Department helicopter crew to Princeville Airport, where officials will try to identify the body.

The recovery of the woman's body comes after witnesses reported a person trying to cross Hanakapiai Stream near its mouth was swept into the ocean by strong currents around 2:55 p.m. Saturday.

The person swept away was described as a man, but Kauai fire officials say except for the gender, the body recovered Sunday was consistent with the descriptions of the person swept away.
