LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) -- Hawaii officials say they're embarrassed by how stranded tourists were treated when a security guard at a Kauai airport kicked them out into a stormy night.
Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz says he called an elderly couple from Littleton, Colo., to apologize. He says the treatment they experienced goes against Hawaii's aloha spirit. Michael Young and his wife were on Kauai celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
Schatz is trying to reach others, who Young says includes a pregnant woman and disabled man.
A state Department of Transportation spokesman says heavy rains canceled flights Tuesday, leaving about 20 passengers stuck at the airport. The small airport is normally closed after 10 p.m.
Young says the guard threatened to call the police if they didn't leave. They spent the night at a shelter.
