COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Prosecutors are asking the Ohio Supreme Court to reject a condemned inmate's last-minute request to delay his execution.
Attorneys for Abdul Awkal (ab-DUHL' AW'-kuhl) wants Wednesday's execution delayed to provide time for a hearing on Awkal's mental competency.
Cuyahoga County prosecutors said in a filing late Monday that the latest psychiatrist to evaluate Awkal is an outspoken death penalty opponent with a clear bias.
Prosecutors also say Awkal is unlikely to win his argument in court and that a delay at this stage is unnecessary.
They also say the request is not fair to the surviving family members of Awkal's victims.
