AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Summit County has become the first in northeast Ohio to complete its section of a popular trail used by runners and bicyclists.
The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/ILd8hi ) reports the county's final section of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail is less than a mile long. The $1.8 million section was officially dedicated Wednesday, giving Summit County 41.1 miles of the trail stretching from border to border.
Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh), Stark and Tuscarawas (tus-kuh-RAW'-uhs) counties are working on other parts of the trail.
Its first section opened in 1993 in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Since then, officials have spent about $93 million to finish 81 miles of the 101-mile trail. It runs south from Cleveland through Akron to New Philadelphia.
Park officials say it attracts 2.5 million visitors annually.
