Ohio college reaches agreement over old bomb plant

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- A central Ohio college has reached an agreement with the U.S. Defense Department to investigate contamination at a former bomb factory.

Otterbein University reached the agreement Wednesday with the U.S. Department of Defense and the state Environmental Protection Agency, outlining an investigation of the former Kilgore Manufacturing Co. site in suburban Columbus.

The agreement says the parties will work toward a final decision on property cleanup after the investigation is completed in the coming years.

The property was donated to the university in 1962. School officials later filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court saying pieces of flares, artillery rounds and fuses for grenades were found on the land in 1996.

The 111-acre site built bombs that were dropped over Japan during World War II.
