WEIRTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Authorities have identified the man shot to death by a Weirton police officer as a 29-year-old resident of Steubenville, Ohio.

Brooke County Assistant Prosecutor Joe Barki tells WTOV-TV (http://bit.ly/GD0OPW) that William Harmon is believed to have been responsible for a string of crimes, including a gas station armed robbery.

Investigators say he stole cash from an ATM before a chance encounter with the officer Tuesday morning.

Barki says the shooting appears to be justified but State Police are investigating. He's also awaiting an autopsy report.

The officer's name has not been released.

A clerk who was working when the gas station was robbed said the suspect was a regular customer and even apologized during the crime. But Anthony Hardwick also says he was threatened with a knife.
