CLEVELAND (AP) -- Six people have pleaded guilty in what federal prosecutors in Cleveland say was a scheme to file tax returns in the names of dead taxpayers.

Prosecutors say the six defrauded the Internal Revenue Service out of between $1 million and $2.5 million. Investigators say in many cases they were using names and Social Security numbers of taxpayers who recently had died.

They pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges that include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to commit mail fraud and mail fraud.

Five of the people are from northeast Ohio while another is from Florida.

Authorities say the six filed false and fraudulent tax returns from April 2009 to at least last August.
