CINCINNATI (AP) -- An Iraq war veteran has a narrow lead over Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt as she seeks the GOP nomination for a fourth full term.

Army combat surgeon Brad Wenstrup was 916 votes ahead of Schmidt with 53 percent of precincts reporting unofficial returns. He had 47 percent of the vote to her 45 percent Tuesday. Three other candidates trailed.

Two Democrats vied for the nomination to oppose her in the southern Ohio district that stretches east from Cincinnati into Appalachia. Schmidt was first elected in a 2005 special election to succeed Rob Portman. Portman is now a U.S. senator.

Wenstrup was an unsuccessful nominee in the Cincinnati mayoral race in which Democrat Mark Mallory won re-election in 2009.
