PARIS (AP) -- Struggling French second-division side Angers has offered a contract to Lionel Messi -- a Cameroon-born 17-year-old central midfielder who impressed during a trial period after being spotted playing in southwestern France.

Angers head of youth recruitment Axel Labatiniere told The Associated Press by telephone on Tuesday that the club watched Messi in February playing for Toulouse Fontaines and was struck by his natural "feel for the game."

Labatiniere says Messi was invited for a trial period and offered a contract at Angers, which is in western France.

Messi, who is French and whose full name is Lionel Messi Nyamsi, is still playing with Toulouse Fontaines and is considering the offer.
