LONDON (AP) -- A friend of Fabrice Muamba says the Bolton midfielder's family reports he's started speaking again, two days after going into cardiac arrest during a match.

Curtis Codrington told The Associated Press after talking to Muamba's family Monday that his friend had spoken "minimal words in English and French, which is better than nothing."

Codrington has been visiting Muamba in intensive care since the player collapsed during Saturday's match at Tottenham.

Earlier, the hospital said Muamba had begun to show "small signs of improvement." His heart started beating without the help of medication Monday and his arms and legs were moving. But the statement emphasized that he remained in critical condition.
