BALTIMORE (AP) -- Loyola (Md.) enters the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1994 as the 15th seed in the East Region, and will open play against Ohio State on Thursday.

The Greyhounds (24-8) earned a berth in the tournament by defeating Fairfield 48-44 on Monday to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship.

The team and coach Jimmy Patsos gathered inside Reitz Arena on Sunday night to hear the announcement. Patsos and his players sat on chairs and a sectional couch in front of televisions at midcourt while fans and boosters watched from the stands. Both scoreboards showed the result of the MAAC championship game.

Patsos and the players stood and cheered when Loyola learned its fate.

Ohio State is 27-7. The game will be played in Pittsburgh.
