Gremio hires former Brazil coach Luxemburgo

SAO PAULO (AP) -- Two-time Brazilian champion Gremio has hired former Brazil coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo on a contract until the end of the year.

Luxemburgo is replacing Caio Junior, who was fired on Monday after only a few months on the job with the traditional club from southeastern Brazil.

A former Real Madrid coach, Luxemburgo was fired by Flamengo on Feb. 2 after a series of internal disputes with some players and directors at Brazil's most popular club.

Luxemburgo is one of Brazil's most successful coaches with five domestic league titles, although he hasn't won many significant titles in the past few years.

Gremio said Tuesday that the coach will be officially introduced on Thursday.
