Withey comes out of 'left field' for No. 4 Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas coach Bill Self admits that 7-footer Jeff Withey's dominant play has come out of "left field."

Withey has been crucial for the fourth-ranked Jayhawks over their past three games. First came a career-high 25 points in a win at Baylor, and then an 18-point, 20-rebound performance against Oklahoma State that left Cowboys coach Travis Ford scratching his head.

Withey kept the roll going Monday night with 18 points and 11 boards at Kansas State.

The senior could barely get on the court last season when the Jayhawks went 35-3 and won their seventh straight Big 12 title. It just might be Withey who emerges as the anchor for another March run by Kansas.
