English FA chief: Redknapp amazing, fine manager

LONDON (AP) -- The head of the English Football Association has hailed Harry Redknapp's "amazing" work at Tottenham and said the vacant national team job is more suited to an older coach.

Fabio Capello's sudden resignation on Wednesday left England searching for a new coach just four months before the European Championship.

Redknapp is the leading contender, with Tottenham third in the English Premier League.

FA chairman David Bernstein says Redknapp has "done amazingly recently. He is a fine manager and he is English."

The 64-year-old Redknapp underwent heart surgery in November but quickly returned to Tottenham.

Bernstein says the England job "is more suited in some ways to an older person than club management where the demands are absolutely incessant."
