NEW YORK (AP) -- Wendy's pigtails are getting a tweak.
For the first time since 1983, the Dublin, Ohio-based fast food company is updating its logo in a move intended to signal its ongoing transformation into a higher-end hamburger chain.
Instead of the boxy, old-fashioned lettering against a red-and-yellow backdrop, the pared down new look features the chain's name in a casual red font against a clean white backdrop. An image of the smiling, cartoon girl in red pigtails floats above -- though this girl looks more vivid and not quite as childlike.
It's only the fifth logo update since founder Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy's in 1969.
U.S. to Jordan: The United States has sent troops to Jordan to bolster its military capabilities in the event Syria's civil war escalates, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday, reflecting U.S. concerns about the conflict spilling over allies' borders and about the security of Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.
Security claims: Four weeks before the election, Republicans used a politically charged House hearing to confront State Department officials about security at the U.S. Consulate in Libya and assail the Obama administration's early response to the killing of the ambassador and three other Americans there. GOP lawmakers refused to accept the department's explanation Wednesday that protection judged adequate for the threat was overwhelmed by an unprecedented assault in Benghazi on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. A top State official acknowledged she had declined to approve more U.S. security as violence in Benghazi spiked, saying the department wanted to train Libyans to protect the consulate.
Texas execution: A Texas man whose lawyers argued was mentally ill and incompetent for execution was put to death Wednesday evening for killing a 12-year-old girl more than a decade ago. Jonathan Green, 44, received lethal injection. Asked by the warden if he had a statement from the death chamber gurney, Green shook his head and replied, "No." But seconds later he changed his mind, saying: "I'm an innocent man. I never killed anyone. Y'all are killing an innocent man."
Colorado girl abducted: The sudden disappearance of a 10-year-old Colorado girl took yet another turn Wednesday, with authorities saying they believe she was abducted. The case has seen a number of twists since Jessica Ridgeway vanished Friday on what should have been a short walk to school. On Wednesday afternoon, authorities say they believe Jessica was kidnapped by an "unknown suspect." Adding to the mystery was a reported sighting in Maine of a car with Colorado license plates.
