Bass fishing and gas drilling meet in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Bass fishing, gas drilling and downtown Pittsburgh collided at a professional fishing tournament last week, and the unlikely partnership prompted cheers and concerns from anglers, environmentalists and the general public.

The Marcellus Shale Coalition 3 Rivers Challenge ran from Thursday to Saturday, as bass and walleye fishermen prowled the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers in search of a big catch. Gas drilling coalition leader Kathryn Klaber says many people in the industry are avid outdoorsmen.

Christina Handley is the president of a local water conservation and protection group at the event. She says the gas drilling industry still hasn't eased her concerns.

Rick Lorson of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission says area water quality has improved tremendously over the last few decades, but much remains to be done.
